EMDR

EMDR is a relatively new, fast and effective therapy. It is recommended by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) who approve treatments in the NHS. It is recommended as the treatment of choice for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It is also used for phobia, depression and a number of issues where people find themselves stuck with recurrent and problematic thoughts.

The rather cumbersome full name for EMDR is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. The technique involves the client concentrating their thoughts and following the therapist's hand repeatedly with their eyes as the therapist moves their hand from side to side. Other techniques are possible for people who have eye problems, such a tapping on the hands or presenting sounds in alternate ears.

Latest research suggests the stimulation of both sides of the brain allows new neural connections to be made, bringing insight to previously stuck problems. Memories and thoughts stored in closed loops find an exit, allowing full cognitive processing and resolution.

The number of sessions depends on the severity of the problem. The issue may be resolved in two sessions, while other issues may take 4 or more sessions.
